Your router’s private IP address is the backbone of your home or office wireless network. Private, or gateway IP addresses such as are the addresses your router has on the network, and it used to connect to other devices you sign onto – PCs, tablets, phones, and other internet-capable gadgets. This IP address is part of a range of IP addresses widely and universally used for local networks, known as static IP addresses, which are not visible on the internet but are essential for the internal networking needs of your home or business. For instance, the first device you connect to the WiFi gets the local IP address, the second one, and so on with the rest of the IP addresses range (192.168.8). In this way, your router “knows” where requests for data packages come from, and where to send them once it receives them from the internet. To communicate with websites and services, the router uses another, public IP address different from, which is assigned by your ISP (Internet Service Provider).

If you’d like to customize and optimize your wireless network, you can use the private IP to get into the admin menu. First, make sure that your router’s gateway address is indeed For that purpose, just look at the back of the device. The label there should have the private default IP address, along with the logins for the admin panel, listed there. If you encounter trouble accessing the login page, ensure your device is connected to your router’s network. Now you can connect your laptop or tablet to the WiFi and type into the address bar of an internet browser of choice.

Entering the IP address directly into your browser’s address bar should take you to the router’s login page. You should be able to load the login screen. Use the default user name and router password you found to login to the administration menu of your router.

Picking Up a new IP for your Router

If is not your private IP, but you want to make it so, or if you’d like to change your router’s default gateway address to anything else, you can easily do it from the router interface admin panel. Changing your router’s IP address to a static one can help prevent connection issues within your network. Just look at the ribbon on the top or the side of the main page. Find the Network Settings tab and click on it. In the next window, look for the Private IP/IPv4 tab. You can pick up any string of four numbers between 0 and 255, such as as your private IP address. Fill in the new default gateway IP and hit save. You might need to restart the router before the change goes into effect.

Updating the SSID at

The Service Set Identifier (SSID) is your Wi-Fi network public-facing name. It pops up when you open the menu with available WiFi networks in range. You can set up any name you’d like to make your network stand out from the rest. To do that:

  • Open the admin menu router interface at the ip address.
  • Go to the Wireless Settings tab
  • Find the SSID field
  • To strengthen your network’s security, regularly changing the SSID and security settings is strongly recommended.
  • The default SSID will most likely be the brand and model of your router
  • Fill in any SSID name you’d like
  • Remember, a unique SSID can help distinguish your network from others in the area.

Setting up a Password for your WiFi

At the same place that you use to update your SSID at, you can also set up a password for your wireless network. It is highly advisable to do so so that only you and the people you tell the wifi password to can use your WiFi. To update your WiFi password:

  • Open the admin menu at
  • Go to the Wireless Settings Tab
  • Find the password tab
  • To change WiFi password, select a new one that meets the recommended security specifications.
  • Choose a strong password that is a combination of numbers, letters (lower and upper case), and symbols and is at least 12 characters long
  • Save the changes.

Troubleshooting your connection

If your Wi-Fi isn’t working, or you can’t get into your router’s admin panel at, there might be several things wrong:

  • Your Ethernet cable might have gotten disconnected from the router.
  • If you can load the admin menu at, that might not be your private IP address. In case that this an incorrect IP address for your router: you should check the label at the back of the device, or call your ISP to ask if they changed it.

  • If multiple attempts fail, try using the reset button to return the router to its factory settings, which can resolve most connectivity issues.
  • Your router might have run into a hardware issue instead of having wrong router settings, or your router’s connectivity might be down. In both cases, it is best to contact your ISP to see if they can figure out a solution.

Incorrect versions of the IP address

Beware that the correct IP address is often mistaken and mistyped as one of the following incorrectly written versions: 
  • 192.168.l.8
  • ip.
  • 192.168.81

It is a best practice to always make sure that you are entering the correct IP address – to avoid connectivity problems. Using the default credentials provided on your router or its manual can help you access the admin panel successfully. If you have lost those credentials, a factory reset may be necessary to restore default settings and regain access using the default username and password.
